DISORIENTATION

ABOUT THE PROJECT
The experience is divided into 4 parts. Orientation recreates the feeling of discovering a new space, like when we map a space in our minds to familiarize it. Disorientation has the opposite effect. It is caused by chaotic visuals, changes in light and frequency, and disjointed sounds. These things put together disturb our sense of proprioception, and in its absence, we are able to understand why it is necessary. Re-orientation takes the form of a navigatory guide, using geometries and directions to reset our internal compass. Lastly grounding is akin to a guided meditation which facilitates the viewer feeling safe within their bodies again.
Our concept began from a feeling: the feeling of finding your feet upon arriving in a new city. We are faced with new streets, new sights and smells, thus creating a new sense of navigation. We asked ourselves, "what is it about our bodies and our minds that allows us to become familiar with foreign surroundings, and get comfortable enough to rebuild our lives in a new space?" To answer this question, our research led us to discovering proprioception, or kinesthesia - the internal sense of the human body that lets us perceive the location, movement and muscle force of our limbs, therefore allowing us to become aware of the spaces our bodies occupy. The human body is a tangible vessel through which our minds experience and navigate the world, much like a compass.

In absence of orientation we are able to understand why it is necessary.
